Building Confidence. I once struggled with my self image. However, what I thought saw in the mirror is not what others saw.

Have you ever stood in front of a mirror, mercilessly scrutinizing every detail? You are not alone. Many of us grapple with our self-image, spending years convinced that the reflection staring back defines our worth. I too battled this struggle, unaware that my perception was often clouded by insecurities and harsh self-criticism.
In 2013, I underwent gastric sleeve surgery and lost 100 pounds—a transformation that should have been cause for celebration. Yet, despite the physical change, my mind remained anchored to my previous self. Even now, 11 years later, when I look in the mirror, I still see that guy—the one carrying the weight of past memories and self-doubt.
But professional portraits told a different story.

I lost 100 pounds after the surgery. I feel better and I am healthier, but I still see that me from time to time.
After I started photography I did not realize how powerful the right picture could be. I took some photos for one client and her response made me feel like a hero. I never had a photo that made me feel the way she described. I was truly an amazing feeling to know that something I did changed something in another.
A couple years ago now I showed up to be an assistant photographer for a christmas shoot. Something happened where the clients didn't show up. So I volunteered to be the model. I was definitely not comfortable in front of the camera, but I had good time. I wasn't expecting much from the photos.

The images captured a reality far removed from the what I had constructed in my mind. They revealed a person I barely recognized—not because of physical appearance.
(I mean, I don't think I'm ugly, but definitely not a stud looking for these kind of photos.)
These were fun and I don't hate them. I sent them to my friends as a joke but they all said, "John, You are looking good." That was a great boost in my confidence. I still have this christmas card hanging on my fridge. If you book with me you can see it. LOL
Not every photograph is a winner, of course. Some catch you mid-blink or at an unflattering angle. Whether it's portraits, headshots, pet photography, or even boudoir sessions, capturing one's true essence is an art. But the great images? They're more than just pictures. They're evidence. Evidence that challenges the distorted lens through which we view ourselves.
This journey taught me a big lesson: our self-perception is often complex and flawed in some ways. Woven together from past experiences, insecurities, and internalized rejections. Breaking free requires more than physical transformation—it demands a radical reimagining of how we see ourselves.
To anyone struggling with their self-image, remember: you are not defined by any single reflection, a single moment, or a single perspective. You are a continual process of becoming, constantly evolving, and perpetually worthy of compassion—especially from yourself.
